Carl Rose- EPL Review

Coach Carl Rose of SSC will be providing some insight on professional games. He will point out things that our players could watch for and learn from the professional level.

Game-Manchester United vs. Blackburn Rovers, 11/11/2007

This game was played with Manchester United winning 2-0. Both goals were scored by Cristiano Ronaldo. The second goal was the goal I think youth players should try and emulate. The play started with Man U defending deep in their end of the field, they cleared the ball long to the halfway line. Louis Saha received and played the ball one touch to Tevez who was making an overlapping run. Tevez then broke behind the Blackburn defense and was going to goal, Saha also started running towards the goal. But the most impressive part of the play was when the long ball was played to Saha. Ronaldo was deep in his own half, as the ball was played long Ronaldo started running with a defender next to him. He out ran the defender, followed up on the play and by the time Tevez was crossing the ball into the box the player getting on the end of the play to score was Ronaldo.
That play to me was something that I feel young players don’t do in their games. A lot of the time they assume that the player is going to score. So instead of following the play they stand around and watch the play. When maybe if they were to follow the play they might get a pass or the rebound to score a goal. This little difference might get their team that goal they need to change the game they are playing.

Hmmmmm....

Anyone get a chance to look over the All District teams and awards from this years HS season on sgfsoccer? SSC is strongly represented on each of these teams and many of the awards. Tryouts are coming up and SSC is looking forward to the upcoming season. Best of luck to Kickapoo this weekend in the Final 4 in St Louis!!

Still some dancing going on for some SSC alumni

Well after a weekend of tournament action some SSC alumni have moved on and some were sent home thinking about next year.

Karissa Nedoma and the Drury Panthers have moved onto the sweet sixteen in DII. They beat conference foe SIU-Edwardsville in the second round to earn a spot in the sweet sixteen and now they will face off again #1 Grand Valley State from Michigan. Best of luck to the Lady Panthers!!

Luke Prater and the Wartburg Knights lost in their match against UW-Oshkosh and Luke finished off a very solid season with the Knights. He was named to the All IIAC 2nd team as a freshamn and was a starter for the Knights all year long.

Patrick Carver at Emory in Atlanta lost in their second round matchup against Redlands from California. Carver capped off a strong year by being named the UAA conference Player of the Year. The UAA boasts some of the best teams in DIII soccer and this is a big accomplishment for Carver.

Josh Florez at Washington University(MO) enjoyed the most success this past weekend in Whitewater, Wisconsin. WashU beat UW-Whitewater and then defeated Dominican from Chicago in the 2nd round. Next up for WashU and Florez is Transylvania(PA). WashU are hosting the sectional matches in St Louis this weekend. So if you have some time on your hands and want to see some very top notch soccer travel on up and catch the games.

Kate Brooks at William Jewell in KC have earned a spot in the NAIA national tournament as a #6 seed. Play begins Friday for the Cardinals as they will play Northwood from Florida. Good luck to the Cardinals and Katie!!

DANCING!

Many SSC alumni have secured their way into the postseason tournament. Upcoming will be a complete rundown of all players participating in the tournament......

NCAA Division III Mens Tournament:

Wartburg College-Luke Prater and the Wartburg Knights finished second in the IIAC to #3 ranked and undefeated Loras College. The Knights went 15-3-2 this year and Luke has been a mainstay in the starting lineup all year long as a freshamn. Wartburg travels to Wisconsin-Oshkosh for a first round matchup this weekend. Best of luck Luke!!

Emory College-Pat Carver and the Eagles from Emory finished up the year 16-2-0 and have received a first round bye and face the winner of UC-Santa Cruz/Redlands. Those of you not familar with the layout of Division III soccer, Redlands and UC-Santa Cruz are from out West and are two of the strongest programs in DIII. Emory will host the second round game in Atlanta, good luck Pat!

Washington University(MO)-Josh Florez and WASH-U finished at 13-4-2 and earned a spot in this years tourney via an at-large bid. They will play Carthage from Wisconsin in the first round and if they win will play the winner of the Wisconsin-Whitewater/Dominican(IL) game.

NCAA Division II Womens Tournament:

Drury University- Freshman Karissa Nedoma and the Drury Panthers won the GLVC tourney title over UM-St Louis this past weekend in a penalty kick shootout. The tournament championship gave the Panthers a automatic bid into the D-II playoffs and they will face West Virginia Wesleyan in Edwardsville, Illinois this Friday night. The title in the GLVC and tournament bid are both firsts for the up and coming Panther women's team. Well done Karissa and good luck this weekend in Edwardsville!!

Tourney and club facts:

This years Divison III Final Four will be held at the Disney Complex near Orlando, Florida. There are some very strong ties to DIII soccer on the staff at SSC. Jeremy is a graduate of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, so Luke will have some bragging rights if they can beat the Titans. Zach played at Loras College for his 4 years of college soccer and has been excited to see the Duhawks rise to #3 in the nation this year and have an undefeated record of 20-0-1. Eric is a graduate of West Texas A&M from the Divison II ranks. A&M won their conference this year going 16-2 overall and are hosting the first round of games in Canyon,TX.

SSC is very proud of all their alumni and wish them the best of luck in their upcoming tournamnet action!!
